Welcome Thrift Seekers
Once Upon A Time
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t salvaging. As kids we would clamber into the big green bins that were around town. Dumpster diving was a fun, exciting venture involving lengthy discussions about who was going in and who was going to stand watch. One of my first best finds was a copper wash tub/boiler with a lid. It has been with me for almost 30 years (minus the lid which has mysteriously disappeared). And in spite of the teasing I have endured over the years about my eclectic methods of home furnishing, this was just the beginning of my foray into salvaging. That my parents also resurrected found items has most certainly also had an influence on my desire to rescue stray objects.
While the allure of accumulating exciting new finds was my primary salvaging objective in the beginning, I began to be concerned that useable products were accumulating in our already overcrowded landfills. And so I also began to collect items I didn't personally want, giving them to friends or donating them to local thrift stores. It was just recently that I saw an opportunity to extend my love of salvaging into a business opportunity.
And so begins the tale of The Ugly Duckling.
Welcome.

Ugly Ducklings vs. Swans
If you are searching under the Ugly Duckling tab you will find a range of objects that are, for the most part, in their original condition. They have required some cleaning or possibly a small repair. Because of the limited amount of work I have had to put into them their prices will be relatively low. Items under the Swan tab have undergone a larger transformation to make them presentable to you; sanding, painting, repairing. Therefore the cost of these items will take into account the cost of the materials plus my time. Still a bargain and unique to boot.
Happily Ever After
I am not naive enough to believe that even if the items I collect manage to find a new home they will not eventually end up in the landfill, however if I can delay that outcome for a while and ensure the items have most definitely had their maximum use, then hurray. Each month I will feature the items I have managed to re-home here, through sale. Donated items appear on the "Paying It Forward" page. A happy ending for them and for me.
